Our Programmes

We deliver a wide range of programmes, from Learn-To-Swim all the way through to Competitive Swimming.

Stroke Correction

PEA's Learn To Swim group is designed to help swimmers build a strong foundation in the water. In this group, we focus on:

Developing basic techniques in all four strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly

Building confidence and comfort in the water

Fun, supportive environment to get our swimmers started on their swimming journey

Stingrays

The Stingrays Swimming Group offers 45-minute lessons where swimmers will begin learning the art of streamlining, a key skill for improving efficiency and speed in the water. The group also incorporates diving techniques and continues to refine the skills developed in our Stroke Correction Group, helping swimmers build stronger, more confident strokes. This program is designed to challenge young swimmers while providing the guidance and support needed to enhance their performance in the pool.

Dolphins

This is a developmental training group for swimmers who have shown potential and commitment to swimming. The swimmers focus on building strong technical foundations across all four strokes, learning race skills and developing good training habits. The program emphasizes skill progression, discipline and fostering a love for the sport, while gradually introducing them to more structured training. The Dolphins squad prepares swimmers for the transition to the Junior squad with a balance of fun, challenge and personal growth.

Juniors

This squad has its focus on competitive swimming and emphasis will be placed on skill development, race strategies and endurance. Members of this squad will be committed to pursuing regional goals and are expected to maintain a strong work ethic and perform at their very best, both in practice and competition. This group is a stepping stone to one of our Senior squad.

Seniors

This squad is designed for swimmers competing at the highest levels, including national and international meets. The group focuses on both sprint and distance specialization, offering tailored plans to meet the specific needs of each athlete. Swimmers in this group demonstrate commitment, discipline and technical proficiency. Training is intensive and strategically structured, incorporating race strategies and fosters a high-achieving team-oriented environment where athletes are supported in reaching their full potential and preparing for elite-level competition.

Nesibindi

Nesibindi (adjective … a Xhosa word when translated into English, “Brave”)

Our Story

When a group of boys built up the courage to approach their favourite lifeguard at the beach near Wells Estate, they unwittingly planted the seed for what would later become PEA’s Nesibindi Outreach Programme.

Through the initiative and help from both our club and the broader Gqeberha swimming community, Coach Natalie Ogden and Lifeguard Luvuyo Nonzinyana coach youngsters from Zwide and surrounds in a life changing programme which can potentially save lives and exposes these children to an entire lifestyle and sport they were not even aware of.

Nesibindi initially took place at the Zwide municipal pool but because the pool operates during summer, it was moved to Summerwood Primary School where the children take to the water every second Saturday under the care of Coach Nats and Luvuyo. They are assisted by a group of volunteer lifeguards and Learn To Swim coaches.

Through this program we are able to identify children with a real talent for swimming and our aim is to register them as amateur competitive swimmers. We want to teach them to swim and hopefully they can protect themselves and others from drowning. Exposing the children to swimming as a sport, giving them something to take interest in outside of their community is a very fortunate and important part of our programme.

Both Natalie and Luvuyo were honored for their achievements with the Nesibindi programme by being awarded the joint The Herald Nelson Mandela University Citizens of the Year Award 2024 in the Health and Safety category

But this award has not stopped our mighty team. It’s now a question of how much bigger can we go? How much more can we develop this programme? And how many more people might be inspired to assist those in need through their own field of expertise like we have, with Nesibindi.

We are incredibly proud to say that Luvuyo has now qualified as a Learn To Swim Coach. One more step in our journey.

We’re excited to see what happens next! And if you’d like to join us in making a difference, donate now! Our list of needs is endless … from helping pay transport costs for the lifeguards and swimmers, to clothing, towels and swimming caps to meal packs for the children on a Saturday and to take home for their families.
